A 'Paused' Scene in the Heart of the City
Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square, usually a hub of bustling activity, suddenly came to a standstill. On April 14, the 10th annual Space-out Competition took place, turning heads as contestants sat motionless. These participants were chosen to compete in the ultimate challenge: doing absolutely nothing amidst the city's noise.
The goal of this event is to celebrate the value of mental rest (a state where the brain stops processing active information and takes a break). In a culture that prioritizes productivity, this competition suggests that staring into space is not a waste of time, but a necessary reset for our minds.
The Rules: Science Behind the Stillness
Winning the competition requires more than just a blank stare. The judging process is surprisingly rigorous and involves both objective data and public opinion. Key rules include:
- Heart Rate Monitoring: Judges check participants' heart rates every 15 minutes to see who stays the most relaxed.
- Public Voting: Onlookers vote for the contestant who looks the most "spaced out" or peaceful.
- Disqualifications: Falling asleep, checking a phone, laughing, or chatting will result in an immediate red card.
"Being still in a fast-paced world is a skill. It is about reclaiming the right to rest in a society that never sleeps."
A Message of Slowing Down to a Fast Society
Modern people live in a state of constant information overload (receiving more information than the brain can process). Just like a computer that overheats when too many programs are running, our brains need a cooling-off period. This event serves as a practical example of how to manage stress by intentionally disconnecting.
Participants joined from various walks of life, dressed in everything from office suits to pajamas. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they all shared one goal: to prove that sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is absolutely nothing. This unique festival continues to grow as a symbol of mental wellness in urban environments.
