PM Kim Min-seok Pays Respects to Fallen Heroes
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok visited the funeral hall for the firefighters who lost their lives on the 12th while battling a fire at a seafood processing facility's cold storage in Wando, South Jeolla Province. The Prime Minister offered words of comfort to the families who lost their loved ones in this sudden and tragic accident.
During the rescue operation, the firefighters courageously entered the scene amidst heavy smoke and intense flames to save residents. To recognize their extraordinary bravery, the government decided to posthumously award them the Okjo Order of Service Merit (a high-ranking medal given to public officials who have made significant contributions to the nation through their dedicated service).
Honoring the Supreme Sacrifice with Dignity
At the mourning altar, PM Kim laid the medals before the portraits of the deceased. He instructed officials to ensure that all administrative procedures are handled swiftly so that these fallen heroes receive the highest honors and respect they deserve from the state.
"The sacrifice of these firefighters, who gave their lives to protect our citizens, is a noble spirit that our society must remember forever. The government will stand by the bereaved families to ease their sorrow in every way possible."
In light of this tragedy, the government plans to re-examine the working conditions and safety equipment of firefighters nationwide. Discussions are also underway to implement technical solutions, such as Intelligent Fire Detection Systems (devices that use AI to instantly identify smoke or flames), to minimize risks in high-danger zones.
A Commitment to a Safer Nation
The cold storage facility where the fire occurred had a structure vulnerable to rapid toxic gas spread due to insulation materials. To prevent similar accidents, the government will conduct a full inspection of seafood processing plants across the country and strengthen safety management protocols.
- Enhanced Honors: Providing full support for funeral services and designating the fallen as National Heroes.
- Support for Families: Reviewing emergency living expenses and educational scholarships for children.
- Safety Audits: Replacing outdated equipment and improving protocols for high-risk deployments.
After paying his respects, PM Kim encouraged the colleagues of the fallen who are still performing their duties on-site. Citizens across the country are also participating in memorial services, both online and offline, to remember the true heroes of our society.
