Global Spotlight on Gyeonggi’s Green Policy
The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, an international group of advanced nations) has officially recognized Gyeonggi-do's 'Climate Action Opportunity Income' as a leading example of public sector innovation for 2026.
This recognition highlights how local governments can use financial incentives to encourage citizens to participate in environmental protection.
What is 'Climate Action Opportunity Income'?
This program is similar to a reward app (apps that give points or coupons for walking). In Gyeonggi-do, citizens receive 'income' in the form of local currency for eco-friendly activities such as:
- Using public transportation instead of cars.
- Recycling plastic bottles and using multi-use containers.
- Participating in environmental campaigns like tree planting.
Why the OECD is Impressed
The OECD selected this case because it transforms the 'duty' of saving the planet into a 'financial benefit.' Instead of just telling people to save energy, the government provides actual cash-like points to those who contribute.
By being named an innovation case, Gyeonggi-do's policy becomes a global standard (a reference point for others to follow) that other countries can study. It proves that environmental protection and economic support can go hand in hand.
