Fatal Collision on Jeju Road

A man in his 50s died after the bicycle he was riding collided with an oncoming bus in Jeju City on the morning of October 3. He had been cycling with members of a club when the crash occurred on the 1100 Road in Gwangnyeong-ri, Aewol-eup.

The collision was reported at about 9:25 a.m. The cyclist suffered severe injuries and was taken to hospital in cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart stops pumping blood effectively, but later died.

The cyclist was riding downhill with club members when his bicycle and a bus traveling in the opposite direction collided.

What Is Known About the Crash

The road at the scene has one lane in each direction. The group of cyclists was heading downhill, while the bus was traveling uphill on the opposite side of the road.

Investigators have not yet established how the two vehicles came into contact. In particular, police are examining whether either the bus or the bicycle crossed the center line, which separates traffic moving in opposite directions.

  • The crash took place on the 1100 Road in Gwangnyeong-ri, within Jeju City.
  • The cyclist was riding with fellow members of a cycling club.
  • The bus was approaching from the opposite direction while climbing uphill.
  • The driver showed no signs of alcohol or drug use, according to the information reported so far.

Investigation Underway

Police are questioning the bus driver and cyclists who were riding with the man as they work to reconstruct the collision. Their accounts may help establish the vehicles’ positions and movements immediately before impact.

The investigation is ongoing, and no cause has been confirmed. The absence of signs of alcohol or drug use by the bus driver does not, by itself, determine how the crash happened or establish responsibility.

Why the Center Line Matters

On a road with one lane in each direction, the center line marks the boundary between opposing traffic. Determining whether a vehicle crossed it can be important in understanding a collision, but investigators must also consider other evidence, including witness statements and the physical scene.

What Investigators May Need to Establish

  • Where the cyclist and bus were positioned before the collision.
  • Whether either vehicle crossed into the opposing lane.
  • How the downhill and uphill sections affected the vehicles’ approach and movement.
  • Whether witness accounts and other available evidence support a clear sequence of events.

Risks on Narrow, Hilly Roads

A road with a single lane in each direction leaves less room for vehicles traveling side by side than a wider road. Hills and downhill sections can also make it harder for road users to judge distance and react quickly, although investigators have not said that either factor caused this crash.

For cyclists, riding in a group requires attention to both the road ahead and the position of other riders. Drivers approaching cyclists on a narrow road also need to leave adequate space and remain alert to changes in the road’s slope and visibility.

Safety Context and Next Steps

The crash is a reminder of the risks that can arise when bicycles and motor vehicles share narrow roads, particularly where the route rises or falls. These general safety considerations should not be confused with a finding about this incident; the precise circumstances remain under investigation.

Police are continuing to gather information from the bus driver and the cyclist’s companions. Their findings are expected to clarify how the collision occurred and whether the center line played a role.
