Middle East Peace Hopes Spark Stock Market Rally
South Korean stocks saw a significant boost on Tuesday as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East showed signs of cooling. The possibility of renewed talks between Washington and Tehran encouraged investors to return to riskier assets.
The KOSPI (Korea Composite Stock Price Index) gained 159.13 points, or 2.74 percent, to close at 5,967.75. During the session, the index briefly crossed the psychologically important 6,000-point threshold for the first time since early March.
Tech Giants and Financials Power the Surge
The market recovery was largely driven by heavy buying from foreign and institutional investors. While individuals sold off shares to lock in profits, institutions and foreigners net purchased trillions of won worth of stocks combined.
Recent comments from Donald Trump sparked this optimism, suggesting that Iran is looking for a deal. This has led many to believe that the two nations might return to the negotiating table soon.
"Investors are anticipating a second round of peace talks. Reports that both sides have exchanged terms on uranium enrichment (the process of refining raw material for nuclear use) have further fueled hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough."
Sector Winners and Losers in a Thawing Market
The rally was broad-based, with major technology and automotive companies seeing substantial gains. These companies often benefit when global trade risks decrease and the economic outlook stabilizes.
- Samsung Electronics: Rose 2.74% to close at 206,500 won.
- SK hynix: Jumped over 6% ahead of its upcoming earnings report.
- Hyundai Motor: Advanced 2.72% following the general market trend.
However, defense shares (stocks of companies that manufacture military weapons) went in the opposite direction. As the fear of immediate conflict faded, industry leaders like Hanwha Aerospace and LIG D&A saw their prices drop slightly. The local currency also strengthened against the U.S. dollar, reflecting a more stable economic environment.
