A New Chapter in Korea-UAE Economic Relations

President Lee Jae Myung met with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on November 18, 2025, during his state visit. A major breakthrough was achieved as both leaders agreed to move up the implementation date of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to May 1.

"This early effectuation is a bridge connecting Middle Eastern energy with Korean technology, creating a powerful engine for global growth."

What is CEPA? (The Premium Trade Deal)

CEPA is more advanced than a standard Free Trade Agreement (FTA). While an FTA mostly focuses on reducing taxes (tariffs) on goods, CEPA covers a wider range of cooperation, including services, digital trade, and investment protection.

Think of it as a 'VIP Membership' between two countries. It allows businesses to move products and services across borders as if they were in the same neighborhood, removing complex red tape and extra costs.

Key Benefits for the Global Market

The agreement is expected to bring significant changes in several key areas:

  • Energy Security: Ensures a stable supply of crude oil from the UAE under more favorable terms.
  • Defense Exports: Lowers barriers for Korean defense technology to enter the Middle Eastern market.
  • High-Tech Synergy: Encourages joint ventures in AI (Artificial Intelligence) and semiconductors between companies from both nations.

By speeding up this agreement, both countries are positioning themselves as leaders in the future global economy, creating new opportunities for startups and large-scale industries alike.
