A Secret Weapon: The Mythos Model

Jack Clark, co-founder and Head of Public Benefit at Anthropic, has confirmed that the company provided a briefing to the Trump administration regarding its new AI model, Mythos.

Unlike typical AI releases, Mythos is being kept away from the general public. This is because the model possesses powerful cybersecurity capabilities (the ability to find and exploit vulnerabilities in computer systems), making it potentially dangerous if misused.

"Our position is the government has to know about this stuff... we'll talk to them about the next models as well."

Legal Battles vs. National Security

Interestingly, this cooperation comes while Anthropic is actively suing the U.S. government. In March, the company filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defense (DOD) after being labeled a supply-chain risk (a company whose products might introduce security vulnerabilities into a government's system).

This conflict stems from a fundamental disagreement over ethics:

  • Anthropic's Concern: The company opposed the military having unrestricted access to AI for mass surveillance of citizens or creating fully autonomous weapons.
  • The Outcome: Due to these clashes, OpenAI ultimately secured the government deal instead.

Despite this, Clark describes the legal fight as a "narrow contracting dispute," arguing that it should not hinder the company's commitment to national security.

The Economic Ripple Effect: Jobs and Education

Beyond security, Clark addressed the fear that AI could trigger mass unemployment. While CEO Dario Amodei has warned of job losses comparable to the Great Depression, Clark offers a more measured perspective.

Currently, Clark's team of economists has only observed "potential weakness in early graduate employment" in specific sectors, rather than a total collapse of the job market.

Advice for the AI Era

When asked what college students should study to survive the AI revolution, Clark suggested focusing on synthesis (the ability to combine different ideas into a single, coherent whole).

  • Avoid: Narrow, repetitive technical tasks that AI can easily replicate.
  • Pursue: Majors that require analytical thinking across multiple disciplines.
"The really important thing is knowing the right questions to ask and having intuitions about what would be interesting if you collided different insights from many different disciplines."

In short, while AI can act as an infinite library of experts, the human value now lies in the ability to connect those dots in creative and strategic ways.
