A Silent Reunion Behind Bars
Former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, shared a brief but emotional reunion in a Seoul courtroom on Tuesday. This marks their first face-to-face meeting since July, when Yoon was taken into custody following a failed attempt to declare martial law (a temporary rule by military authorities during a national emergency).
Kim has also been detained since August on various corruption charges. She was summoned to testify in a case where her husband is accused of violating the Political Funds Act (laws regulating how politicians raise and spend money) by allegedly accepting free election-related services.
Tense Moments and Legal Silence
As Kim entered the room supported by correctional officers, Yoon fixed his gaze on her. When she took her oath and sat in the witness stand, he offered a faint smile. Kim maintained her usual courtroom appearance, wearing a black suit and white shirt with her hair tied back.
During the session, the special counsel team presented more than 40 questions. However, Kim largely refused to testify, choosing to remain silent while looking downward throughout the proceeding.
"Despite the numerous questions from investigators, the former first lady remained mostly silent, exercising her legal right to refuse testimony in her husband's trial."
The Core Allegations: Free Polls for Nominations
The central issue of the trial involves allegations that the couple accepted 270 million won (approx. $183,000) worth of opinion polls for free from a power broker. In exchange, they are suspected of helping a specific politician secure a nomination (a party's official choice of a candidate to run for office) in the 2022 by-elections.
- Free Opinion Polls: Accepting professional polling services without payment during an election is considered a serious legal violation.
- Power Brokering: Investigators believe the couple used their influence to exchange political favors for financial benefits.
Throughout the 30-minute session, Yoon watched his wife closely. As she stood up to leave, he smiled broadly and gave a quick nod of encouragement. While they face these charges together, Kim was recently acquitted in a separate first-instance trial related to the same case in January.
