A Global Celebration of Culture in Busan

This July, Busan, South Korea, will host the UNESCO World Heritage Committee session, a prestigious gathering that manages and decides on the world's most precious heritage sites. This event is a crucial platform for evaluating the cultural and natural value of various global landmarks.

In preparation for this event, the official emblem (a symbolic logo representing the session) has been unveiled. This design will serve as the first impression of Korean beauty for experts coming from all over the world.

Design Inspired by Traditional Shrines

The newly released symbol was inspired by the shrine (a traditional building used to honor ancestors), an architectural style that holds deep spiritual significance in Korea. For Koreans, a shrine is a place of great respect and solemnity.

Key features of the design include:

  • Curved Tiled Roofs: The elegant rooflines of traditional Korean houses are expressed with a modern touch.
  • Harmony and Balance: It reflects Busan's unique character, where ancient tradition meets modern technology.
  • Message of Connection: It symbolizes how global heritage connects the past to the future for the next generations.
"This emblem represents our commitment to protecting humanity's shared heritage while showcasing Korea's unique architectural beauty to the world."

What Does the UNESCO World Heritage Committee Do?

Each year, this committee designates new World Heritage Sites (locations of outstanding value to all of humanity) from applications submitted by countries worldwide. It is a process where the world collectively agrees to protect places like the Pyramids of Egypt or Korea's Bulguksa Temple.

Approximately 2,000 international and domestic participants are expected to attend the Busan session. This event is a golden opportunity for Busan to strengthen its status as a global cultural hub.
